SHILLONG, April 12: The High Court of Meghalaya on Tuesday called upon the district council and the municipality in Jowai to make every attempt in ensuring proper collection of uncollected garbage and its appropriate disposal in Jowai urban township in accordance with law.
The ruling comes after the court heard a PIL on complaints about household waste and garbage in general not being collected in Jowai urban township area since February 4. “Photographs, said to be recently taken and appended to the petition, reveal a nasty state of affairs,” the High Court observed.
The petitioner, in the PIL, seeks regular garbage collection and efficient waste disposal system.
The HC, in its ruling, submitted that the responsibility for garbage collection and waste management is of the district council and the municipality.
The court said that the matter will appear a week hence for a preliminary hearing and appropriate directions.
