SHILLONG: The Congress has threatened to sever ties with the NCP since its leader Robert Kharshiing is taking up the issue of crime against women.

The two NCP MLAs Sanbor Shullai and Marthon Sangma are supporting the Congress-led MUA-II Government. Besides the NCP, the Congress which has 29 legislators is also supported by as many as 12 Independents.

Kharshiing, who is camping in Shillong, told reporters on Monday that the Congress wanted to do away with the support of the NCP due to his initiative of filing a PIL with the Supreme Court to seek justice for the Williamnagar gang-rape victim.

According to Kharshiing, the Government should be above party politics when it comes to issues concerning the welfare of women.

“I am also not interested in taking up any post in the present Congress-led Government,” he added.

Kharshiing also said that the Chief Minister never bothered to respond to his call when he wanted to apprise him about the need to address issues concerning crime against women in Meghalaya.

“It appears that with a three piece suit and fancy sunglasses, the Chief Minister is more interested in inaugurating fish ponds rather than addressing the issue of crime against women in the State,” Kharshiing said.

According to Kharshiing, he is not following any anti coalition dharma and what annoyed him was the lack of proactive steps on the part of the Government in dealing with the crimes against women.

“The growing crimes against women is an emotional issue of the whole country and the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is concerned over the matter which resulted in the Government passing a strong anti-rape law,” he added.
