SHILLONG: Steering clear of the controversy over filing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court by party leader and former Member of Parliament Robert Kharshiing, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) State unit on Tuesday clarified that Kharshiing had filed the PIL in his own individual capacity.

“PIL was filed by Robert Kharshiing in his own individual capacity and the Meghalaya State NCP is not aware of the matter,” the party said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.

The party has also denied reports that Congress has threatened to break ties with the NCP on the grounds that its leader Robert Kharshiing is taking up the issue of crime against women.

According to the NCP, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma had himself clarified that the question of breaking ties does not arise as the Government was committed towards stability.

The statement further mentioned that the party’s MLAs were in constant talks with the Government to resolve the matter of crime against women and treat it with utmost importance.

It may be recalled that Kharshiing, who is camping in Shillong, had told reporters on Monday that the Congress wanted to do away with the support of the NCP due to his initiative of filing a PIL with the Supreme Court to seek justice for the Williamnagar gang-rape victim.
