SHILLONG, April 19: At a time when Jowai and Shillong are reeling under the need for landfill sites, NPP MLA from Jowai on Tuesday revealed that it is the public dissent that continues to hamper the selection process.
“We are trying to make them understand and are raising awareness, and they are of the idea that we are just going to dump (the garbage) like before but we are going for scientific disposal and we have assured them. However, the people are not accepting it,” said NPP MLA from Jowai, Wailadmiki Shylla, adding, “So many organisations are there nowadays, and we are finding it difficult.”
Informing that apart from the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) land that the government has identified for the landfill site, few more are yet to be identified.
When enquired about the names of the sites identified, the MLA did not spill the beans on them.
“As of now, we can only opt for temporary measure, and if I divulge (the names), people will oppose and spread wrong perception about it. We are trying and are hopeful that the selection process will be successful,” the MLA said.
