SHILLONG, April 20: The National People’s Party (NPP) may have a problem of plenty while fielding candidates for the 2023 Assembly elections.
There are speculations that six of the 12 All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) legislators are set to leave the party. Four are expected to join the NPP and two may join its ally, United Democratic Party.
The four, including a top leader, are in touch with the NPP, it was learnt.
“Accommodating everyone will be difficult. Preference will be given to those from the seats where we do not have any MLA and to those who have a high chance of winning if fielded from constituencies other than the ones they represent,” a senior NPP leader said.
Political analysts say the recent decision of the AITC and Congress to work together at the Centre has done more harm than good in Meghalaya as many Congress turncoats are uneasy about tying up with their old party.
The state unit of AITC has rubbished reports about some of the party MLAs quitting. But some leaders have admitted resentment has been brewing within the party.
