SHILLONG: In view of the growing number of rape cases being reported from different parts of the State, the Social Welfare Department has decided to organize massive awareness programmes to address the menace.
Social Welfare Minister Deborah C Marak on Thursday told reporters that the awareness programmes would be organised after the Assembly session in different parts of the State including Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills from where several rape cases have been reported in recent times.
Expressing concern over the growing number of rape cases in the State, Deborah said that the awareness programmes would aim to educate people on the need to respect women.
“We would like to include church leaders, elders, NGOs and headmen in the awareness programmes.
She also said that all the stakeholders need to come together to solve the menace of rape in the State.
“We all need to come together for this big challenge,” she said, while appreciating the efforts of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women for tackling this problem.
