SHILLONG, April 22: The Justice (retd) T Vaiphei inquiry commission probing the killing of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew had an inconclusive discussion on Friday on the evidence gathered so far.
Justice Vaiphei said that deliberations will be held on Saturday on whether to wrap up the hearing or implicate more officials or persons.
“If there is an evidence to implicate a person or official, I will have to give them notice as natural justice demands that. If there are any adversaries against anyone in the course of inquiry, I am obligated to give that person or official a chance to defend themselves,” he said, adding that mandatory provisions of the law has to be followed.
The commission has examined several government witnesses including East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, who had led the August 13 operation in Shillong’s Kynton Massar locality.
The family members of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew were also examined by the Commission.
The probe was ordered on August 16 last year after a public outcry over the death of the former HNLC leader, who was shot by the police in an early morning raid.
As part of the inquiry, Justice Vaiphei had visited the victim’s house on February 5.
