Cyclone leaves trail of damage in SWGH

AMPATI, April 27: An overnight cyclonic storm in South West Garo Hills district has left a trail of damage in its wake.
According to information received, the storm, which began late last night, caused damage to houses, schools and even a police station, leaving residents scurrying for cover. The major damage, as per initial estimates, was reported from Zikzak and Betasing C&RD blocks.
Initial estimates from Zikzak Block showed at least 20 villages were affected with at least 205 houses being partially or fully damaged. At least 1,035 persons have been affected.
The Mahendraganj Police Station also suffered major damage due to the cyclonic storm. “At least 20 houses have been fully damaged with the rest suffering partial damage in the cyclonic storm. Schools too have been affected with 13 schools suffering damage in the Zikzak and Betasing Blocks,” said Deputy Commissioner SR Marak.
In Betasing Block, the district administration said that 11 villages with a population of 218 were affected. At least 38 houses have also been partially damaged.
Lauding the efforts of local villagers, the DC informed that neighbours of the affected families were assisting in rebuilding the houses. “We are assessing the damage that has been done and once an initial report is available, gratuitous relief will be announced. We will ensure those affected are taken care of with immediate effect,” informed the DC.
