SHILLONG: NCP legislator Sanbor Shullai was named as the MUA-II government’s candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Shullai, whose name was proposed at a MUA-II meeting held here on Saturday, is certain to retain the post after the UDP-led Opposition alliance decided not to field any candidate for the same.

“We have unanimously decided not to contest the post of Deputy Speaker as majority of the MLAs feel we don’t have the numbers to put up a fight,” UDP spokesperson Paul

Lyngdoh informed on Saturday.

Meanwhile, speaking to media persons after the meeting, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that Shullai’s name has been discussed between the high commands of both the parties.

An elated Sanbor Shullai said that the state unit of NCP will abide by the directive of the party high command.

The Congress led MUA-II is supported by the two-member NCP and as many as 12 Independents.

The other NCP legislator, Marthon Sangma has already been accommodated as Parliamentary Secretary in charge Forest.
