SHILLONG: With no other contender for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat, the Returning Officer will announce Congress nominee Wansuk Syiem as elected unopposed on the last day of withdrawal of nominations on April 11, rendering the April 19 bye-election redundant.

Syiem filed her nominations on Monday.

Meanwhile, NCP legislator Sanbor Shullai filed the nominations to contest the post of Deputy Speaker on Monday. He is also set to be elected unopposed as the Opposition did not put up any candidate.

“Shullai is the Deputy Speaker elect now. However, the formal announcement will be made in the Assembly on April 18 as the election of the Deputy Speaker was earlier scheduled for that date,” Speaker AT Mondal said.
