SHILLONG, May 4: In a slight relief to the months long garbage imbroglio in Jowai, the Jowai Municipal Board (JMB) has been able to lift the garbage that piled in Jowai town, according to Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
“We have got a temporary place to dump garbage for Jowai town. We are also going to have a permanent landfill site for garbage-dumping very soon,” Dhar told reporters on Wednesday.
According to him, the department has already surveyed three-four areas for Jowai town.
“We have not been able to take possession of the land due to opposition from a section of the people. The JMB is currently holding consultations with the people to clear all their doubts on this landfill site,” he said.
The state government, he said, would like to clarify to people that the segregation of the waste would be done with the latest scientific technology which will not affect the environment or the surroundings.
The Minister said he had convened a meeting with the senior officials as the department has continued its search for a place to set up a sanitary landfill site.
Dhar said the state government’s priority at the moment is to get land for East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills.
“We will also be finding land for the landfill site in the other districts,” the Minister said.
He cautioned that the government will not hesitate to take action against people opposing its efforts to get the land for the landfill site.
