SHILLONG, May 4: Even though expectations run rife about Meghalaya being exempted from the purview of Common University Entrance Test (CUET), the state government is still bereft of a clear picture on the matter as it is yet to receive an official communication from the Central government.
Confirming this, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Wednesday said Meghalaya government is yet to receive any official communication from the Centre on exemption from CUET for the state.
“We expect to get the notification from the Centre at the earliest. But we took the assurance of the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, during his meeting with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on the exemption of CUET as final,” Rymbui told reporters.
He, however, said that the exemption would not be applicable to students seeking admission to undergraduate courses run by the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in its campuses.
Rymbui went on to remind that the government had expressed the difficulty for students from the state to appear for CUET from time to time.
According to the Education minister, this exemption would come as a great relief for students since the last date for submission of form to appear for CUET is May 6.
Nonetheless, Rymbui urged those students who are keen to pursue UG courses outside the state to appear for CUET.
Asked to comment on the 600 students who have already paid the fees for appearing in the CUET-2022, the Education minister said that it is still not clear whether the amount will be refunded.
“But I personally feel that it will be a great thing for the students to appear in the CUET, especially those who would like to pursue their UG courses outside. It will be a good thing if the students appear since there is going to be a similar examination for getting admission in the PG courses,” the Education minister said.
