SHILLONG, May 7: Won over by the “love and respect” for him at the United Democratic Party (UDP) camp, National People’s Party (NPP) MDC Mitchel Wankhar joined the UDP during the general meeting of the party at Lawsohtun on Saturday.
“…whenever I see the UDP flag flutter, I get excited. UDP is a party led by the indigenous people of our state. It is also the love and respect that was shown to me by members of the party, especially Paul Lyngdoh, that has convinced me to join the party,” said Wankhar during the programme.
Putting an end to the curiosity of those that were wondering why Wankhar left the ruling party in the state and joined the UDP, he said, “I have been with the NPP for three years but I never felt at home nor do I feel close to it because the leaders don’t belong to the same community and don’t speak the same language, it is difficult to become a part of it,” he said.
He asserted that the UDP thinks about the welfare of the community and its people and aims to uplift the tribal populace of the state.
The meeting was attended by party president Metbah Lyngdoh, general secretary Jemino Mawthoh and working president Paul Lyngdoh, besides a host of other leaders.
It may be noted here the UDP this time is determined to sail through and come out with flying colours in the upcoming Assembly polls.
Moreover, the party had recently disclosed that a lot of sitting MLAs will be joining the UDP very soon.
