SHILLONG, May 14: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has stressed that a state university is set up in Meghalaya.
The state has only one university, North-Eastern Hill University, which is a central university.
UDP youth wing president, Manbhalang Syiemlieh said Meghalaya needs to have a state university to cater to its students.
Expressing concern over the rising problem of unemployment, he said the state government should take up different programmes for the upliftment of the youth.
“The government must see the needs of the youth. Our youth are talented, be it in office work or technical work,” Syiemlieh claimed and urged the government to provide opportunities to them and identify them for employment. He added that the UDP will strengthen party organisation across the Assembly constituencies of Shillong.
It is worth mentioning that the Centre had recently granted exemption to colleges affiliated to the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) from the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
In a letter to Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan said taking into consideration the concerns raised by the CM, such as geographical conditions, hilly terrain, far-flung location, limited digital connectivity, infrastructure etc, the affiliated colleges of NEHU will continue with the existing practice for admission instead of CUET.
