SHILLONG, May 18: In view of cases of crimes against women being reported from many parts of Meghalaya in recent years, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has alleged that the Conrad Sangma-led MDA government has failed to ensure the safety and security of women in the state.
“In 2020, Meghalaya had a statistics of 568 reported cases of crime against women. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has been consistent in maintaining the criminal graph as even in 2022, rape cases are taking place all over the state,” the opposition party said.
According to AITC, in a state where women have larger stakes and participation in social structures, cases of crime against women are abominable. Time and again, the MDA government has failed to secure a state safe for women in terms of safety and protection, it alleged.
The AITC expressed that it is high time that the CM breaks his silence on this issue.
“Raping a woman is rhetoric of power, and who else but the state government can take the onus of ensuring that the power is not free-flowing into criminal hands,” the party said.
