SHILLONG, May 19: Finding better healthcare infrastructure for citizens in Meghalaya may become easier if the proposed collaboration between the Department of Neurosurgery, Madras Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology (MIOT) International, Chennai, and Meghalaya government takes off. With the help of this collaboration, MIOT plans to send patients that require advance treatment to their hospital in Chennai.
Currently, Bethany Hospital is facilitating dialogue between Chennai-based hospital and the state for a possible tie-up.
Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Bethany Hospital spokesperson, Dr Kyntiewlang Sanmiet, said that the collaboration between MIOT international and the state government is still in the discussion stage.
“We are still in talks with the Health department on this,” Dr Sanmiet said.
Also, MIOT International’s Department of Neurosurgery is currently holding a six-day consultation along with Bethany Hospital, Shillong.
Dr Hrishikesh Sarkar, Director, Department of Neurosurgery of the hospital, said that the camp is focusing on children suffering from epilepsy.
According to Dr Sarkar, there are disease conditions in epilepsy among children which are potentially curable.
People, however, need to be aware about the treatment for epilepsy among children, he added.
On the collaboration with Bethany Hospital, he said that they are planning to have a setup for treatment of strokes in Bethany Hospital, adding that basic preliminary investigation, evaluation and management would be done here itself.
However, a simple brain tumor or head injury cases and early diagnosis of neurological disorder cannot be done here in Bethany.
“We are also looking toward having an agreement with Meghalaya where patients could be sent to Chennai for advance treatment due to infrastructure unavailability,” Dr Sarkar added.
