JOWAI: Coal labourers working in several coal mines in Briwar, Shyrwang and other adjoining area fled fearing attacks by local residents of a village in East Jaintia Hills.
Sources informed that the coal labourers left their camps after one Ship Paslein of Samasi village was allegedly abducted by some labourers from Briwar area.
Sources informed that on April 13, Paslein left Briwar in his Bolero (ML05E-1273) to drop passengers to Lanka in Assam.
However, the next day, one of his nephews, Phrangki Paslein received an anonymous call informing him that his uncle was kidnapped and taken to Haflong in Dima Hasoa District.
The caller also demanded Rs 10 lakh as ransom for his safe release.
“Local residents from Lanka organised a search operation and found Paslein tied inside a forest,” sources said.
“Non-local coal labourers working in different coal mines in Briwar fear that there could be a revenge attack on them due to which they fled from the camps,” sources said.
