SHILLONG, June 1: The much-talked-about unification of regional political parties in Meghalaya will not materialise, feels Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) legislator from Mawkyrwat, Renikton L Tongkhar, who has reasoned that none of the leaders are ready to take the lead to unify the regional forces, especially in view of the failed previous attempts.
“The formation of the United Democratic Party (UDP) was to unite the regional forces. But finally it turns out to be failed attempt. We need to accept that the unification of regional forces will never materialise,” Tongkhar said.
Asked if he was planning to join the UDP, Tongkhar said that some of his supporters are making the move.
“But I am an MLA of the HSPDP. Let us see how things unfold in the coming months,” he added.
The HSPDP leader remembered how he and former UDP president, Dr Donkupar Roy, would always discuss the need to strengthen the regional parties in the state.
“We would like to see that the regional forces become a strong force like in other states. But this cannot happen if we have too many regional forces. We cannot strengthen all the regional forces. The only way is we need to have one formidable regional party in the state. It is with this objective in mind that we had formed the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA),” the HSPDP leader said.
