SHILLONG, June 2: Students of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Thursday resorted to demonstration in a bid to mount pressure on the university authorities for acknowledgement of their slew of demands. The demonstration produced an effectual outcome, albeit partially.
The university students, under the banner of NEHUSU, staged a demonstration, alleging lack of amenities at the university campus.
During the protest, the students, who assembled in front of the central library inside the campus, hurdled slogans and marched towards the administrative building. The slogans had grown louder by the time they had reached the administrative building.
The deafening sloganeering is what coerced the Vice Chancellor into coming out of his office, who then tried to calm the agitating students down.
A parley was subsequently organised during which NEHUSU put forth some of its demands — filling-up of all vacancies along with the post of Pro-Vice Chancellor, addition to the current strength of university buses within two weeks, expedition of the ongoing construction of girl’s hostel and initiation of construction of more hostels, better WiFi connectivity at hostels and classrooms alike, beside others.
The VC has, meanwhile, assured partial and immediate redressal of the demands. When the assurance was demanded in black and white by the students, they were provided the same by the Registrar, who, in a letter, assured that issues of WiFi connectivity in hostels, arrangement of buses for students, maintenance of quality of food and water in hostel, sufficient medicines in NEHU health centre and initiation of repair works in the Hotels will be resolved within 15 days.
