Tribunal meets to decide on extension of ban on ULFA, NDFB

 SHILLONG: The Unlawful Activities Preventive Tribunal on Friday began its two-day sitting to decide extension of the ban on militant outfits United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).

One of the tribunals comprising Justice JR Midha of the Delhi High Court was constituted for adjudicating whether there was sufficient cause for declaring ULFA as an unlawful association.

Another tribunal headed by Justice Manmohan Singh of the Delhi High Court was to adjudicate on the activities of the NDFB as an unlawful association.

Several witnesses were examined by the Tribunal on Friday with more witnesses likely to be examined on Saturday.

Senior counsel of the Assam government Abhijit Roy told media persons that several Assam government and police officials were also present in the Tribunal to register their observations.

Superintendent of Police of Udalguri, Assam, Debojit Deori, informed media persons here that Assam police have given their statement on matters relating to the NDFB.

It may be recalled that factions of both the outfits are engaged in peace talks with the government, though both the ULFA and NDFB continue to remain banned.
