Mass afforestation drives mark Day 3 of Environment Week

SHILLONG/TURA/NONGPOH, June 3: As part of Meghalaya Environment Week, mass afforestation drives were carried out across parts of the state with much enthusiasm and vigour.
At Mawlynrei village under Mawryngkneng Block, the Office of the Divisional Soil & Water Conservation Officer, Shillong Territorial Division, launched a programme, which was attended by Mawryngkneng MLA Pyniaid Singh Syiem as the chief guest and Secretary of Soil and Water Conservation department, Dr Joram Beda as guest of honour, among others.
The day was also celebrated with plantation drives at Umsawmat village and Umlympung village.
A total of 10,100 tree saplings were planted at the micro-catchment areas & water sources along with village members and schoolchildren of the village.
Ri-Bhoi
The Office of the Divisional Soil & Water Conservation of Ri Bhoi District Division, also partook in the weeklong celebrations at Nongpoh. Additional Deputy Commissioner BJ Kharshandi, who was the chief guest at the event, informed that over 2.5 million trees will be planted across the state during the month of June and July 2022.
South West Garo Hills
On the same day, under the theme ‘Reclamation Day’, afforestation drive was conducted at Malchapara, South West Garo Hills.
During the programme, the villagers were asked to contribute towards a healthy environment.
