SHILLONG: The local North Tura MLA Noverfield R Marak along with other NGOs and officers on Saturday carried out an inspection on the dam after NGOs stalled the construction of a dam meant to provide an alternative source of water for the growing population of Tura town.

The work for the dam which is being constructed at Daribokgre village in East Garo Hills district has been stopped by the NGOs as they are apprehensive that the tapping of the stream would ultimately result in the drying up of the riverbed downstream.

However, Noverfield R. Marak on Saturday made it clear that the work for the project would continue even as he asserted that the dam would not affect riverbed downstream.

“The nearby land owners and Nokmas are not opposing the construction,” he said.

Earlier, two dozen young men came down to the dam site a couple of days ago and assaulted the workers there, forcing them to flee besides damaging the portion of the dam that had only recently been completed.

According to Marak, the work for the dam is completed and now the work for pipeline distribution is going on.
