JOWAI: People from Karbi villages bordering Khanduli village in West Jaintia Hills District were not being allowed to come to Khanduli market allegedly by members of the Umpawieng Market Committee (UMC), Karbi-Anglong District for the last couples of months thus badly affecting trade in the area.

Sources from Khanduli informed that members of UMC, armed with guns and other lethal weapons, blocked the road from Umpawieng to Khanduli on market days due to reasons best known to them.

Reliable sources close to the Dorbar Shnong Khanduli village informed that people, including traders, from Karbi villages who used to come to Khanduli during market days were stopped halfway by members of the UMC.

“The UMC members, however, did not obstruct the people from Karbi-Anglong area when they are coming to other markets like Namdong (Near Khanduli), Nartiang and Jowai in Jaintia hills”, a member of Khanduli village Dorbar said. People of Khanduli expressed unhappiness over such illegal activities of the

from both sides, particularly the traders.

Meanwhile, the Khanduli Market Committee has decided to meet the West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner to request him to take up the matter with his counterpart in Karbi-Anglong District so that people from both sides can carry on the trade as usual.
