SHILLONG, June 14: The High Court of Meghalaya has asked the state to ensure hygiene and a degree of decency after the state submitted before the HC that several steps have been taken to ensure ethical treatment of animals before they are culled.
The Court’s remarks came while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Gau Gyan Foundation on Tuesday.
“However, the rather revolting sight of skinned animals or parts of animals or chopped off heads staring from the roadside shops remains a reality,” the HC said, while expressing hope that the state takes appropriate measures in such regard, both to “ensure hygiene and a degree of decency”.
An affidavit was used by the state. It was further submitted on behalf of the state that several steps have been taken to ensure the ethical treatment of animals before they are culled.
The petitioners may file a rejoinder to the state’s affidavit within a fortnight from date, the Court said.
In the last hearing in the month of May, the HC had asked the state government to ensure that meat sellers conform to hygienic conditions while carrying out their businesses.
