SHILLONG, June 20: A proposal is in the offing to set up the Kiang Nangbah Square at the junction at Mih Myntdu, Jowai.
The land there belongs to the Transport department.
Talking to reporters, Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai said he has spoken to Transport Minister Dasakhiat Lamare about the allotment of the proposed plot of land for the project.
According to Shullai, a spot inspection of the plot of land in question will be carried out for the Kiang Nangbah Square and the construction of a life-size statue of the legendary freedom fighter.
The Kiang Nangbah Iasiat Khnam Memorial Society (KNIKMS), Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) and Synjuk Ki Waheh Shnong (SKWS) have been asked to write a joint petition to the Transport minister on the proposal, Shullai said, while adding that the copy of the petition will be shared with the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills.
“We will be able to move forward with the proposal once the Transport department hands over the land,” Shullai said.
On the day, the Arts and Culture minister also said that the government is going ahead with the construction of the three freedom fighters — Tirot Sing, Kiang Nangbah and Pa Togan Sangma — on the State Central Library premises.
He even mentioned that the family members of all the three freedom fighters have been apprised of the proposal.
The family members of Tirot Sing have suggested that his face should be as per the photo in stamp, while the family members of Kiang Nangbah and Pa Togan Sangma want the photo of their late kin to appear as per the photo in the Meghalaya calendar.
Talking about the construction of the bust of Tirot Sing at two cultural centres of the Indian Embassy, Shullai said that he write to the Indian Embassy in Dhaka and also the External Affairs Minister. “We will be going to Dhaka along with the family members once everything is finalised,” the minister added.
