SHILLONG, June 21: The Shillong Premier League (SPL) 2021-22 match between Mawlai SC and Shillong Lajong FC was forced to be rescheduled after around 60 minutes of play due to water logging following torrential rains at the MFA Turf, Polo Grounds, on Tuesday.
Mawlai were leading 1-0 when rain interrupted play. Donborlang Nongkynrih scored the only goal of the match when his cross in the 30th minute beat everyone, including Lajong goalkeeper Rajat Paul Lyngdoh.
A hot and muggy afternoon turned cooler during the first half as drizzle fell but torrential rain in the second session played spoilsport.
Mawlai were the more physical of the two sides and enjoyed the better possession, with almost the whole of the first half played in Lajong’s side of the pitch.
That being said, SLFC’s Sangti Janai Shianglong had arguably the best chance of the first half but volleyed over the crossbar from close range in the 40th minute.
According to SPL rules, the remaining half an hour will be played at a date to be set by the Shillong Sports Association.
Mawlai had won their opening game 2-0 against Nangkiew Irat SC while Lajong narrowly lost theirs 1-0 to Langsning FC.
On Wednesday, Langsning will take on Nangkiew Irat at 4pm.
