NONGSTOIN, June 21: The much-awaited road from Nongstoin to Maweit is now expected to make some progress after the government has given life to the hopes of beleaguered locals of Maweit area by floating the tender for the construction of the 23-kilometre road.
The road project is being implemented through Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP) funded by World Bank with a sanctioned amount of Rs 98.26 crore.
The Nongstoin-Maweit road has become notoriously known because of its deplorable condition. The locals including the village Headmen, NGOs and the public have raised concern on the issue and even protested against the government for allegedly doing nothing to improve the decades-old road.
Numerous memoranda were sent to different PWD ministers but to no avail.
Residents of Maweit had once boycotted election in order to register dissent over the pathetic road condition.
The MDA government, however, has approved the road project and now the tender has also been floated considering the area’s potential to generate revenue and the difficulties faced by the people of the area.
Providing assurance to the people of Maweit area, Mawshynrut MLA Gigur Myrthong said that the amount for construction of the Nongstoin-Maweit road will be funded by World Bank.
He has also given the people his word to pursue the project so as to expedite the process.
Once vexed, residents of the area have now praised the state government and the local MLA for heeding the demands of the people of Maweit.
