SHILLONG, June 21: The Meghalaya Assembly Committee on Empowerment of Women is making efforts to provide legal assistance to the family of the two minors who were allegedly murdered by their father on May 30.
Chairperson of the committee Ampareen Lyngdoh, Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Iamonlang M Syiem and Meghalaya State Commission for Women Chairperson Phidalia Toi called on the family at their residence at Nongrah Nonglum on Tuesday.
Lyngdoh told The Shillong Times that they will arrange for a good lawyer to represent the family in the course of its fight for justice.
According to her, the House panel along with the two committees will make efforts to generate funds to pay the lawyer’s fees.
Lyngdoh said that they will first generate funds from friends and well wishers and will also send an appeal to all women to help if the need arises.
“We will assist the family and ensure that justice is neither delayed nor denied,” she added.
Lyngdoh also said that she had requested the two commissions to ensure that ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh is paid by the Social Welfare department at the earliest.
She revealed that the two commissions and the Police department have been given 15 day to sit together and prepare the status report of the case.
