SHILLONG: The Government wants the GNLA to first eschew violence before initiating talks with them.

The GNLA recently offered to have talks with the Government, but asserted that it will not surrender.

Reacting to this, a Home department official said that talks with the Government would be possible only if the GNLA stops violence.

“The militant group has to first abjure the path of violence and extortion, then only we will be able to talk to them,” the official added.

The GNLA in a recent statement said that the militant outfit was willing to hold talks with the Government provided that the issue of demand for a separate Garo state is discussed.

The GNLA also reiterated that there was no question of surrender as the outfit will continue its struggle.

However, the police have stepped up pressure to contain the activities of the outfit in Garo Hills.
