TURA: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), Williamnagar on Tuesday termed the facts presented by North Tura MLA and Parliamentary Secretary Noverfield R Marak on the Daribok stream and other tributaries flowing into Simsang as false and misleading.

JAC president Taison D Shira claimed that the Parliamentary Secretary did not have first hand knowledge of the condition of the Daribok stream, let alone its capacity. Stating that the survey of the Daribok stream by the PHE was made four to five years ago, Shira said the stream had dwindled since then and its discharge (399 litres/sec) was not the same as measured and projected in the DPR.

Dramatic climate change due to rapid deforestation and other environmental factors have caused the stream to shrink, said Shira while adding that the stream would hardly be able to discharge more than a hundred litres now.

On the Parliamentary Secretary’s remark on abundance of tributaries flowing into Simsang up to Williamnagar, Shira said there were only three tributaries– Manda, Rongbang and Daribok– flowing into Simsang.

“If the Daribok stream is dammed, there will be only two tributaries flowing into the Simsang river,” Shira said.

“We have met Deborah C Marak who assured us that the matter is being looked into by the government,” Shira said.
