SHILLONG: The much anticipated modernization cum expansion work of the Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL) is scheduled to be completed within December this year.

“We have kept the deadline of completing the work within this year. The project should be ready by December,” MCCL managing director D Vijay Kumar informed here on Wednesday.

According to him, the new plant which is coming up is expected to produce around 600 tonnes per day once the expansion is completed.

Replying to a query, Kumar informed that the total investment which has been made in this new plant is around Rs 100 crore.

“We have taken a loan of Rs 51 crore from the financial institutions for this project. We have also got some financial assistance from the State Government,” MCCL managing director said.

Though the present capacity of the plant is 500 tonnes per day, Kumar said that the actual production is only around Rs 200 tonnes per day.

“We have done a study to enhance the capacity of the existing plant. We have even submitted a proposal in this connection to the State Government,” he said.

Earlier, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said that from the total amount of Rs 83.07 crore released to MCCL for the period from 2009 upto February 2013, an amount of Rs 43 crore was meant for the new plant and Rs 40.07 crore was meant for the existing plant.

Set up in the early 1960s, the MCCL is the oldest Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) in the State and the only state-owned cement plant.

The cement factory requires modernization to improve cement production.
