SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions and Associations have asked the State Government to initiate action against the chit funds operating in the State.
Talking to media persons here during the rally organized on the occasion of May Day, MJCTUA General Secretary JL Das alleged that the Rose valley company which is operating in the city is also a chit fund company and action should be taken against them. It may be recalled that The Sarada chit fund scam which rocked Bengal, also cheated investors from Garo Hills worth Rs 21 crores.
According to Das, the fraudulent activities of chit funds have resulted in the loss of savings worth lakh of rupees of workers, peasants and employees.
MJCTUA also demanded that the Central as well as the State Government must declare May 1 as paid holiday for all sections of worker in all establishments of organised and un-organised sectors.
Meanwhile, the association has also expressed its concern over the growing crime against women and children in the country as well as the State.
Earlier, the workers held a meeting in the city which was followed by a rally which was taken out to mark the occasion.
