TURA: A village Nokma from interior East Garo Hills turned out to be a real life hero Chow Yun-Fat depicted in the Hollywood movie Bullet-Proof Monk when he withstood a gunshot by a gang of dacoits on Wednesday night.

As many as eight dacoits, three of them armed with pistols, raided the Dawagre Nokma’s house, 8 kms from Williamnagar. The armed gang entered the house and on seeing the 60 year old Nokma, Gosen R Marak, opened fire from point blank range at his chest with a pistol.

The pistol was fired on the front portion of Nokma Gosen’s chest but the bullet failed to penetrate and instead fell off his body much to the shock of the attackers.

Before the dacoits could get their wits together, Nokma Gosen fled from the house calling out for help from villagers even as one of the dacoits fired a second round which failed to hit him.

The dacoits soon after left the house in fear of security forces arriving but before doing so snatched ten thousand rupees and a mobile phone belonging to the Nokma’s wife. “The bullet failed to penetrate probably due to some defect either in the ammunition or the pistol itself. But whatever the cause, it was a miracle the Nokma escaped,” said East Garo Hills police who are pursuing the case. Police sources mention that the gang involved may have been members of the erstwhile LAEF outfit which had earlier demanded extortion from the Nokma.
