SHILLONG: Young scientist of the State, Jenita Mary Nongkynrih, has been selected for the prestigious ISRO Young Scientists Merit Award carrying prize money of Rs 50,000 for the year 2011 for her contribution to the project on National Urban Information System-10K for the NE region as the Principal Investigator.
Jenita is the daughter of (L) C Myrthong and A Nongkynrih. She is the wife of OT Lyngwa and resident of Mawlai Mawroh. She has done her primary schooling from St John Bosco Girl’s High School, Cherrapunjee, Secondary schooling from St. Mary’s HS School, and also completed her graduation from St. Mary’s College, Shillong before obtaining a Masters in Geography from NEHU.
At present she is working as a Scientist at the North Eastern Space Applications Centre, Umiam. She is specialized in Urban Studies, Natural Resources Management and Disaster Management.
Her technical contributions in urban planning for the towns in Meghalaya are worth mentioning. She is involved in national projects for natural resources management in Meghalaya.
Major accomplishments of her work in disaster management include the vulnerability and risk analysis for different hazards in three different urban areas and one district of Assam. She has also published various scientific reports and research papers and attended various trainings at international level (through distance mode) and national level. She has also contributed to the capacity building of students from various institutes working under her.
Director of North Eastern Space Applications Centre Dr S Sudhakar has congratulated Nongkynrih and stated that with this achievement, Nongkynrih has made the people of Meghalaya proud and she will inspire young people who aspire to build their career in space based applications.
