SHILLONG, July 16: At a time when road infrastructure across the country continues to get a facelift with inauguration of highways and expressways from time to time, the story seems quite the otherwise for the roads in Meghalaya.
One such stretch of road falls between Mawryngkneng and Jowai, much to the agony of the commuters and the like.
A visit to Jowai revealed that while the road connecting Shillong and Mawryngkneng is adequately good, the quality of the road ebbs away from Mawryngkneng.
Immediately after crossing Mawryngkneng, one is welcomed by bumps and potholes.
The substandard road also attributes to traffic snarls, thanks to the trucks plying unabated despite the dilapidated road condition.
Many are of the opinion that the road poses threat to the commuters.
There, however, are few stretches on the road which are in a good condition.
The situation further worsens when one enters pothole-ridden Jowai Bypass.
When contacted, an official at the PWD (NH), while informing that bituminous carpeting of the road will not solve the issue, informed that they will soon submit a proposal to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, seeking funds for repair of the road.
The official is hopeful that the Centre, in the next couple of months, will sanction funds for repair work.
