NGOs urge JHADC MDCs to oppose 6th Schedule amendment

From Our Correspondent

JOWAI: Jaintia Hills based NGOs including the Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF), the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) and the All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organization (AJYWO) on Tuesday urged the JHADC members to oppose the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule.

In a joint memorandum submitted to the JHADC Chief Executive Member, MB Rymbai, the NGOs stated that the proposed constitutional amendment of the Sixth Schedule will affect the rights and interest of the indigenous people covered by all three Autonomous District Councils including the Khasi Hills Autonomous District and the Garo Hills Autonomous District Councils.

“Some of the defective amendments of the Sixth Schedule includes the constitution of village councils, empowerment of the Governor to create or constitute municipal councils in areas falling under ADCs and the introduction of the State Election Commission in the ADC beside others”, the NGOs said in a statement issued here.

AIGU expresses concern over cross border crimes

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: The All India Garo Union has urged the State Government to take steps in order to check cross border crimes prevailing in the State.

Condemning the recent incident where over a dozen criminals from neighbouring Assam entered the plain belt region of West Garo Hills and committed a dacoity and rape inside a village under Garobadha police, AIGU president Elbath Marak demanded that the miscreants be brought to book.

While expressing its displeasure over the closure of the anti-dacoity camp in the area, the AIGU said that the incident would not have happened had this camp been operational.

The AIGU also urged the Nokmas and local bodies of the area to work together to fight the anti social elements.
