SHILLONG, July 20: A taskforce has been set up by the state government with specific terms of reference to chalk out long-term measures for solving the garbage problem of Jowai town in West Jaintia Hills district.
Earlier to this development, the High Court of Meghalaya, in its order, said that short-term measures were initiated for the removal of garbage from Jowai and that the inhabitants of Jowai town may not be facing the problems from few months ago.
However, it was submitted on behalf of the petitioners, which include the Synjuk Ki Waheh Shnong Jowai and Jowai Municipal Board (JMB) that the present petition should not be disposed of until a long-term solution comes to the fore.
According to the JMB, sufficient progress has been made in arriving at a long-term solution.
“Let the matter appear six weeks hence in the hope that some concrete long-term solution would have been arrived at by then,” the court said in its order.
It may be recalled that Jowai had been reeling under a crisis pertaining to waste management with garbage being dumped on the streets.
