SHILLONG, July 28: Similar to taxes for fuels, the state government may reduce Goods and Services Tax (GST) on essential commodities.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, on Thursday, said the government will examine if GST on essentials can be reduced.
“You may recall that the state government had reduced the state tax on petrol and diesel earlier. We may take similar steps. But it will require a detailed deliberations how to go about it,” Tynsong told reporters.
Tynsong, however, made it clear that the power to withdraw GST on essential commodities lies with the Centre.
“The principle guidelines of the GST are applicable throughout the country,” the deputy chief minister said.
The Opposition has slammed the BJP-led NDA government on the levy of 5 per cent GST on a range of food items sold in packaged form including rice, wheat, flour, dal, paneer, dry fruits et al.
The withdrawal of the GST was also demanded by the opposition.
