SHILLONG: The BJP has expressed concern over the sorry state of affairs of Umroi airport as the flights are not made operational.

The BJP General Secretary Dipayan Chakraborty said that the party was pained to know that the lone flight which operated after a long duration during the NDA regime from Kolkata to Umroi, was stopped by the Government in power resulting in undue sufferings to the people.

“This has also affected the tourism sector as tourists take less interest to visit Shillong, since there is no connected flight”, Chakraborty said.

Commenting on the recent statement of Union civil aviation Minister, the BJP leader said that the party felt that it is a mockery for the Union Minister to say that the certain amount of money is required to develop to expand the Shillong airport.

“If at all the Centre was serious to develop the airport, the Union Minister would have ensured smaller flights from metro cities to land in Shillong airport.

“This would encourage tourism and also benefit the passengers from Shillong especially the students who are studying in different cities in the country”, Chakraborty said.
