SHILLONG: The gruesome murder of the couple at Nongbir-Lum village in Ri-Bhoi on May 6 has turned out to be the result of yet another case of superstitious belief.

According to senior police officials, the couple was murdered simply because they were suspected of practicing witchcraft (Men-ai-ksuid).

The couple identified as Bisha Wahlang and his wife Klitsimai Mawphniang were hacked to death while they were working in their field on the evening of May 6 by Denison Rymbai (23) and Pynkhraw Nongrah (20) who were arrested four days after the incident.

“They (couple and the accused) were relatives and the accused, swayed by superstitious beliefs, had planned to murder the couple for quite some time,” police sources said adding that they had committed this crime believing that the duo were practicing Men-ai-ksuid (witchcraft) after the sister of one of the accused had called out their (couple) names before she died last year.

When asked if there were more people involved in the crime, the police said that the accused had confessed that they only were involved in the murders, even though investigation was on.

The police also informed that the two arrested persons, who are still under police custody, will be forwarded to the court on Tuesday.
