Guwahati: In view of flash floods in Guwahati city due to incessant rainfall, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi held an urgent meeting with Minister for Guwahati Development Department Ajanta Neog and Chairman, GMDA, Capt. Robin Bordoloi.

Gogoi instructed the minister and the GMDA Chairman to initiate immediate measures on a war footing to mitigate woes of the denizens of Guwahati.

He suggested the setting up of local committees in localities affected by artificial floods and an expert committee which would enable the government to formulate a comprehensive policy to tackle the water woes.

During the discussions, the Chief Minister while expressing serious concern over the rampant earth cutting and rock blasting for quarrying on the Meghalaya side bordering Guwahati, said these activities have not only caused environmental hazards but also compounded the artificial floods in the city.

Deputy Chairman, GMDA, Parimal Das was also present in the meeting.

The city has witnessed successive artificial floods over the last week owing to heavy showers.

One woman was electrocuted while negotiating flood waters, while a father-son duo was killed while cleaning a well last week in flash flood-related incidents in the city.

Reports of landslides, damage to houses and injuries to people, were also received. (UNI)
