Science, tech need of the hour for economic growth: Speaker

GUWAHATI, Aug 5: Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh on Friday underlined the critical role played by science and technology in the economic roadmap of the country.
Inaugurating a two-day international conference on ‘Innovation in Management, Science and Technology’ at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), Lyngdoh said, “Science and technology are the need of the hour for economic growth and such a conference will open new doors for research in emerging interdisciplinary areas.”
The conference was organised by the department of computer science and electronics, USTM, in collaboration with the American Institute of Management and Technology (AIMT) and supported by University of Maryland Eastern Shore (USA).
A galaxy of delegates and representatives from 15 countries are taking part in the conference which will feature as many as 25 sessions. About 200 research papers will be presented both in offline and online mode by scholars from India and abroad.
The Speaker also appreciated the initiatives taken by USTM, including attention to underprivileged rural students, free education and payback policy.
A souvenir was also released by the delegates present on the occasion.
Deva D Sharma from The Global Knowledge Foundation (GKF), USA, in his speech, stated that the conference would provide an opportunity for scholars to network.
Meanwhile, a five-day national exhibition and seminar on Plasma Physics concluded on Friday at the USTM with participation of more than 1,000 students from 50 schools and colleges of the region under the guidance of scientists from CPP-IPR department of atomic energy.
Cabinet Minister James Sangma joined the valedictory session as chief guest and handed over certificates to the participating students.
Sangma also inaugurated the Salim Ali Museum of Biological Diversity at I-Block of USTM.
