SHILLONG: In view of the frequent storms and cyclones which has affected and caused the loss of precious lives in the Khasi Hills, the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya (GCCM) has urged upon the State Government to alert the people on the possible storm and cyclone through various medium of information broadcasting including print and electronic media.

In a letter submitted to Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Wednesday, GCCM chairman John F Kharshiing suggested of initiating with Doordarshan for allocating more time for a special daily detail bulletin on the latest weather, and storm warnings as seen and available in most developed countries. He also suggested that FM Radio, local Channels, local newspapers could caution citizens about weather developments on a daily basis.

“With the present availability of high technology, the State Government should set in place a ‘weather watch’ mechanism to be monitored by senior official at the District and Sub-Divisional level, to enable them to make appropriate decisions to caution the citizens,” he said.
