SHILLONG, Aug 7: An awareness talk on anti-ragging was organised by the Shillong College Students’ Union in collaboration with the Anti-Raging Cell at the college auditorium for 1st Semester students.
The resource persons for the programme included senior government official B Mawlong and senior advocate IR Ranee, who is also the guest faculty of Law Department, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
In his address to the students, stating that ragging is a western concept, Mawlong recalled his younger days in his engineering college in Hyderabad, and referred to how it was earlier taken as a social interaction between seniors and juniors. “However, today ragging has become a serious issue as it has destroyed not just careers but also lives,” he said
Talking about what constitutes ragging, Mawlong pointed to the effects of the activity. He urged the students not to indulge in ragging and to use the mechanisms in place to report any such cases.
Meanwhile, Advocate Ranee, in his address to students, emphasised on the Aman movement as he narrated how the UGC Anti Ragging Act 2009 originated. Referring to Meghalaya and the absence of a state law on anti-ragging, he drew the students’ attention on the central regulations which include the Indian Penal Code and UGC Anti Ragging Act 2009.
