SHILLONG: One Rista Nongrum (24) was brutally assaulted in public by one Kristina Mawrie and her daughter-in-law, Amani Mawrie at Rynjah near ITI on May 14 on allegations of an affair between the victim and the son of the accused.

The victim who was shifted to Civil Hospital after receiving a severe head injury and bruises all over her body told reporters that the accused alleged that Nongrum was going around with her married son, Shanbor Mawrie (26).

“He (Shanbor) was only a friend but later he started spending more time with me than with his wife, and fearing any unwanted consequences, I told him to keep away since he is married but he never listens”, she claimed.

It was on May 1 when Kristina came to the victim’s house and threatened to ruin her life, Nongrum said adding that out of fear, she started to distance herself from the 26-year old boy.

“It was however, on May 13 night when he had called up informing me about his condition after getting beaten up by some local boys in an inebriated condition that I had gone to meet him and on meeting him, he said he wanted to run away with me, of which I declined to accept and took him to the hospital”, Nongrum said.

“The next day (May 14), his mother and his wife, came to my house, pulled me out and started bashing me up, smashing me against the wall resulting in the head injury and punched me so hard on the chest. They even cut my hair, poured chilies on my body and tried to stripped me naked in public but failed to do so”, the victim mentioned.

The victim has also alleged that the accused had threatened to take her life and stated that she won’t stop until Nongrum is dead. “She claimed that she will go to the extreme of killing me without expressing no fear for the police or the social organization as she stated that she is influential and powerful”, she added.

Meanwhile, a case was only registered by the CSWO on Monday, a week after the incident. When asked about the delay in filing an FIR, the victim said, “I didn’t even go to the hospital fearing that it will turn into a police case, and that a lot of money would be invested to file a case. It was until, I couldn’t bear the pain anymore, that I have decided to go to Civil Hospital and reported the matter to the CSWO who filed a case on my behalf”, she added.
