SHILLONG: While the Joint Acton Committee comprising of Williamnagar-based NGOs opposed the proposed construction of the Daribokgre dam, the Tura Garo Senior Citizens Forum (TGSCF) has supported the Government’s
move stating that tapping water from the Daribok stream will be an alternative to supply water for Tura populace.
The Forum with WG Momin as the president, WD Sangma as secretary, (Rtd) pro-vice chancellor of NEHU Dr Milton S Sangma, (Rtd) IDP Skylance G Momin, president of the Nokma council Gredalson C Momin among others as members conducted a spot inspection of the area recently and came up with a report stating “the idea and views of the JAC members in respect of protection of the Daribok stream is the same as the senior citizens. The dryness of the stream due to environmental degradation and its extreme impact is visible and even if the dam is not constructed the dryness of the streams will remain constant unless some measures are taken to keep the catchment areas alive”, TGSCF president WG Momin said.
They also maintained that construction of dam across the Daribok stream would also mean retention of water and soil and the excess water will flow over the dam.
