SHILLONG, Aug 31: All set to take the high and mighty through ideas, KAM Meghalaya, a platform for independent candidates, has announced the candidature of leader of domestic workers’ movement, Wanpynhun Kharsyntiew, from 16 East Shillong on Wednesday in the upcoming Assembly polls.
“It is time we push women who actually understand and believe in women’s rights. During elections, everybody would like to talk on anti-corruption or pro-development topics but as public, we have every right to check their track record,” said social activist and KAM member, Angela Rangad.
“When somebody says they are against corruption, let us see whether they themselves have in their public life indulged or been part of corrupt practices or benefitted from them and have they kept mum when there were scams around us when our rights were taken away,” she added.
Stating that Kharsyntiew is a special and important candidature, she said that electoral politics will be reshaped. “People think that electoral politics should be reserved for the high and mighty, for ones who are wealthy on yours and my money, stealing from people. We have to push that imagination and reclaim what electoral politics is all about.”
Meanwhile, , Wanpynhun Kharsyntiew said that the rights of the working class have been stolen.
“There is not even a single law in favour of unorganised sector and labourers,” she said.
She also pointed out that while tall claims are made by leaders, the reality is that the state does not even have a single state university even after 50 years and the young generation is losing hope.
She is contesting as an independent as registration process of KAM with Election Commission of India will take more time.
The sitting legislator of East Shillong is Ampareen Lyngdoh.
