SHILLONG, Sep 1: The KSU Laban Circle on Thursday met East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo and urged the district administration to evict the illegal settlers from Maxwelton Estate.
The KSU delegation informed the deputy commissioner that around 150 families had illegally settled in the area and that they fear that the Maxwelton Estate would turn into another Them Metor (Harijan Colony).
The KSU leaders also questioned how people who had settled there were allowed to rear cattle since the area falls under the Shillong Municipal Board.
It alleged that the area has turned into a den of various criminal activities and a hub for illicit drugs trade.
The union also raised the issue of Army encroachment in Lawsohtun area. They said Army personnel create trouble in the area leading to fear psychosis among the residents.
The KSU urged the DC to remove the signboard mentioning defence land since the land belongs to the PWD and individuals.
According to the KSU, the DC assured them the authorities will act on the issues outlined by the union.
