SHILLONG, Sep 1: Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Thursday said his department has sought some clarifications on the report of a fact-finding team on the alleged vehicle scam in the Police Headquarters.
He also gave his predecessor James PK Sangma a clean chit when pointed out that the irregularities happened during his tenure as the Home Minister.
“It is not a question of whose tenure it was. Ministers come and go but the institution remains and it is our duty to uphold the process of the law,” Rymbui said.
“There is no point of any knee-jerk reaction or taking a harsh decision. We have to go by the legal process,” Rymbui said while updating on the status of the case.
“The fact-finding team constituted by the DGP has submitted the report to the Home department, which is studying the report for necessary steps,” he said.
“We have sought some clarifications following which we may ask for an explanation from or give a show-cause notice to anyone found involved in the case. We will be able to tell you the step taken in a few more days,” Rymbui said.
He declined to say if any name surfaced in the report.
On the suspension of a former Additional Inspector-General (Administration), he said any action will be based on the police service rules.
Rymbui refused to buy the argument that the incident has shown the police in a bad light.
“I do not think the people have lost confidence (in the police) because of the report. We will deal with anyone found misusing or abusing his authority,” he said.
BJP demands suspension of former AIG (A)
BJP leader and party’s state executive member Pawan Sharma on Thursday asked the Home department to suspend the then AIG (A) GK Iangrai for his alleged complicity in the vehicle scam.
Sharma claimed that also stated that the alleged corruption within the Police department has hit the people of Meghalaya hard and they have lost all faith in the government.
“A CBI inquiry should be initiated at the earliest to look into the charges. How can the Police department itself investigate such a major charge? The government, if it has any morality left, should immediately suspend Iangrai,” he said.
