Agartala: After one and half decades since the Jarulbachai massacre in Agartala, Tripura police have succeeded in nabbing another prime accused of the incident where as many as 16 people, including women and children, were brutally killed.
Police said that, acting on a tip-off, police of Srinagar police station in the southern outskirts of Agartala had arrested Falgun Debbarma from remote Dhundrai Para under West Tripura district on Saturday night.
Falgun was carrying a tag of Permanent Warrantee on his head.
Falgun had returned after nearly 15 years to visit his house on Friday but the police network intercepted his movement and accordingly arrested him from a house.
Falgun was one of the prime accused in Jarulbachai massacre and had been leading life as a self-styled leader of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) outfits for the time being in those days.
The NLFT is a proscribed group that seeks to separate Tripura from India.
Another prime accused of the massacre Ashok Debbarma alias Achak was awarded a death sentence for his involvement in the Jarulbachai massacre and another, Gandhi Debbarma, an accomplice of Achak, was also found guilty by the court, though he was found to be absconding.
The CID had filed charge-sheet against 16 NFLT militants among whom 11 were reported absconding.
Five were later arrested, including Achak and Gandhi Debbarma.
In the case regarding Achak Debbarma, police had submitted a charge-sheet under section 302 and 307 of the CrPC and section 27 of the Arms act.
However, a lower court had acquitted three other accused in the case – Buddhi Debbarma, Mantu Debbarma and Shabhuram Debbarma from the case.
Though Achak moved the High Court, the Agartala Bench of the Gauhati High Court upheld his death sentence in September last year. (UNI)
